One of my favourite destinations, its long thin shape, with the Andes running the entire length of the country, ensures a great variety of habitats. These range from the high Altiplano to the world's driest desert, the Atacama. The long coastline with the Humboldt Current offshore means seabirds are in abundance, from the fabulous Inca Tern in the North to Albatrosses on the crossing to Tierra del Fuego. Waders are well represented including the sought-after Diademed Sandpiper-plover and the Magellanic Plover, the world's only wader which regurgitates food to its chicks! Whilst there is no rainforest, this is compensated for by such species as Andean Flicker (a woodpecker where there's no wood!), Oasis Hummingbird, Andean Condor, three species of Flamingo, Torrent Duck and Mountain Parakeet. Perhaps not the easiest of countries for bird photography, but well worth visiting for the scenery and interesting species. Cetaceans, notably Black and Commerson's Dolphins, are frequently seen in the South.
