The North Pacific

AUKS, ALBATROSSES AND MORE.
A trip to Sakhalin, the Kurils and Kommander Islands which I undertook primarily to see Red-legged Kittiwake and various other gulls also provide the spectacle of thousands of Pacific Auks, including the strange- looking Whiskered Auklet. Another region which is primarily accessible only by ship, a number of companies still operate tours in the area. The emphasis is on quality rather than quantity with species such as Aleutian Tern, Spectacled and Steller's Eiders, Gyrfalcon, Mongolian Sandplover, Laysan Albatross and the aforementioned Auks (up to fourteen species). Sea Otters (we saw over 500 one morning) and Orcas are plentiful in the region, whilst passerines include Siberian, Brown and Eye-browed Thrushes, Siberian Blue Robin (blue ones!), Narcissus Flycatcher, Siberian Rubythroat and various Warblers.
