South Africa the Cape

A short trip to the Cape region resulted in some wonderful photo opportunities, both of birds and flowers. All of the "Cape endemics" were readily observed, plus other interesting species such as Black Harrier, Black Sparrowhawk, Blue Crane and two species of Eagle Owl. However the highlights for many people are the Southern Right Whales which can be seen from land (we could see the calliosities in our 'scopes as a family group passed by), and the famous pelagic trips. Unfortunately the weather was far too rough on our trip, making photography impossible, but the sheer numbers of birds is a fantastic spectacle. They include Albatrosses, Shearwaters,Petrels,Prions,Skuas, Cape Gannets and even penguins. This must be the best one-day pelagic in the world.
