The South Pacific

RARITIES IN PARADISE.
Many and varied are the islands of the South Pacific, we have only visited a small number. However Dave Rosair, in his quest to see all the world's waders, arranged a tour on a ship serving the Tuamotu and Marquesas Islands, to visit an uninhabited atoll, Tahanea, the location of the last known sightings of Tuamotu Sandpiper. I was lucky enough to accompany him along with about 18 other keen birders. The sandpiper was duly seen and photographed, along with Bristle-thighed Curlew, many seabirds and various island endemics, including Raratonga Flycatcher and Tahiti Monarch. Some of these islands may be visited as stopovers on the way to New Zealand, especially the Cook Islands. Very few species are the norm., but every island or group has its own endemics, some of which are extremely rare, so "quality" is as high as anywhere in the world.
