CURLEW SANDPIPER Calidris ferruginea

A passage migrant which breeds in Arctic Siberia, but in migrating to Africa passes through Western Europe including the UK. A smaller number also migrate towards Australia. Numbers are far fewer than twenty years ago but the breeding success fluctuates, and large influxes still occur occasionally in autumn. Few ever see them in full breeding dress, but moulting birds are relatively often encountered.
