SPOON-BILLED SANDPIPER Calidris pygmaea

Birding's ultimate "Holy Grail", never common but in far greater numbers thirty years ago when this poor shot was taken in Hong Kong. Unfortunately the vast mud flats at Mai Po meant that birds were rarely seen closely, but the page is ready for when (if) I get a decent shot. Recently re-classified as a calidrid, the monotypic genus status was presumably based on the bill alone.
