RUFF Calidris pugnax

Despite its recent re-classification as a Calidrid a number of things make Ruffs unique. Strongly sexually dimorphic, including size, their lekking behaviour is not found among other waders, much less the large variety of male breeding plumages. The colour of the ruff is apparently an indication of the birds status at the lek. Breeding from the UK to Eastern Siberia, the bird is very familiar to UK birders but succesful breeding is rare.
