COMMON TERN Sterna hirundo

A widespread northern Hemisphere breeder migrating to the south and commonly seen on many still bodies of water in the UK, familiarity with this species aids identification from several similar species worldwide. The black bills of eastern races do not help in this respect, but it is likely that such birds occur in the UK from time to time.
