BLUE PETREL Halobaena caerulea

Another circumpolar monotypic genus, this species is of uncertain relationships but seems most closely related to Prions. Similar in appearence, it can always be identified by the white tip to the tail, but if this cannot be seen it can make ID difficult, as it overlaps in range with all species of prion, indeed it breeds sympatrically on Crozet and Kerguelen with Slender-billed. In sunlight it is a beautiful bird, deserving of its name, but worn plumage and dull weather make its appearence much greyer. Another feature separating it from prions is the lack of a white supercilium, at best a restricted white line from the forehead into the black hood.
