BLACK-VENTED SHEARWATER Puffinus opisthomelus

Puffinus shearwaters are far more difficult to photograph than their larger cousins, only really approaching boats if in large rafts on the water. Most form rafts but it is often a matter of luck. This species is near-threatened and restricted in its breeding range to islands off Baja California, with a very few in the Sea of Cortez. These poor shots were taken on a whale-watching trip, when there were few around due to El Nino. Dispersal is both north and south to California and Costa Rica.
