CAPE CORMORANT Phalacrocorax capensis

An endangered species, found from south Angola to the southern coast of South Africa, encompassing the Benguela Current. Although still relatively common, it has experienced a 60% reduction in numbers recently due to over-exploitation of fish stocks in the Benguela Current, among other factors. It still however is more numerous than the other cormorants of the area by a factor of forty or fifty. Often seen in large flocks, the yellow gular is diagnostic.
