SURFBIRD Calidris virgata

Another North American migratory wader, primarily a Western bird, which by happy coincidence provides an ideal name for the well-known website. Breeding in mountains above the tree-line in Alaska and Yukon, the first nest was found only in 1926. The right photo shows a winter flock in Washington state, with the distinctive flight pattern, while the centre is a near-breeding plumage bird in Chile. The wintering bird was part of the flock, winter records are extremely rare away from Pacific coasts.
