An Arctic breeder but in smaller numbers than the other Arctic gulls, nesting in river
deltas. It winters within the Arctic Circle, but vagrants are quite frequent, especially in
Britain. Strangely, the majority are adults, sometimes in breeding plumage with a beautiful
pink flush and occasionally in the summer months. At all ages birds are characterised by their
wedge-shaped tails, sadly climate change may well mean less UK records in future.
