Endemic to Southern Australia and Tasmania, easily identified by its massive bill. A strictly coastal bird
which is fairly sedentary, and solitary in winter. Perhaps most closely related
to the Dolphin Gull of South America but far less numerous,
it is currently near-threatened
in the Red Data book.
