BAND-TAILED GULL Larus belcheri

Breeding on the coasts of Peru and Northern Chile, a fairly distintive gull. Although superficially similar to Kelp Gull it has a very different jizz- the head appears small, and the broad black tail band is almost unique in adult gulls. In winter the head becomes very dark, almost like a hooded species. The next species was formerly lumped with it, although juveniles are very different.
