The most striking tern in most people's opinion, endemic to the Humboldt Current and found commonly
in harbours, rocky islets etc. from central Chile to Northern Peru. A large tern, the striking feature is
the combination of red bill, large yellow sub-loral spot and curved white plumes from the lores to behind the eye.
Non-breeding plumage is much duller, and juveniles positively boring grey-brown.
