BUSH THICKNEE Burhinus grallarius

Cairns Cemetary, Queensland, where the left hand bird was taken, must be one of the world's easiest wader "stake-outs". although this species is frequently found around camp-sites etc. One of two Australian species, these crepuscular birds are well-known to locals for their wailing calls during the night. I left our hotel early one morning to find one wandering around the main street, a bit different to their British relative the Stone Curlew.
