AUDOUIN'S GULL Ichthyaetus audouinii

One of the rarer gulls worldwide, although recently increasing in numbers and range. Breeding mainly on Mediterranean islands and the Ebro Delta in Spain, records in Britain are slowly increasing. The long-awaited "first" was in 2003, since when a further seven have been seen, the first and fifth (left) being illustrated here. Dungeness has hosted three in total, not alyogether surprising given its position, although one was seen in the centre of Sheffield. Birds disperse south to North African coasts, commonly Morocco and Tunisia.
