The least widespread of the tiger-herons, this species is largely
confined to Central America. Reasonably common in that part of the world, these birds were photographed in Costa
Rica, where they are the common tiger-heron. The photos were taken in the Cano Negro region where they breed and are almost
abundant, seemingly quite tolerant of humans. The juvenile is strikingly different.
