Procellaria petrels are intermediate between Pterodromae and the larger shearwaters. Excepting Grey Petrel, all are predominantly dark brown, and can be difficult to seperate at distance. This species is found throughout the Southern Oceans, breeding on many subantarctic islands, and dispersing north and up the Humboldt Current. The white "chin" is usually invisible in the field.
