SPECTACLED PETREL Procellaria conspicillata

Originally lumped with the previous species, it apparently diverged some 900,000 years ago but has remained endemic to Inaccessible Island, part of the Tristan da Cunha group. Numbers are actually increasing, although listed as vulnerable the eradication of pigs from its natal island has bought about an increas in numbers. The white on the head varies, but most birds are well marked. Normally disperses in subtropical Atlantic waters, but on our Atlantic Odyssey one followed the ship from Tristan to within one days sailing of the equator, which would have been the first for the Northern hemisphere.
