SCOPOLI'S SHEARWATER Calonectris diomedea

Still a contentious split in some quarters, this species is the "original" Cory's Shearwater, breeding on many islands of the Mediterranean. The more westerly-breeding taxon has become Cory's. Both are similar, taking detailed observation of the wingtips to separate them, and both disperse over large areas of the Atlantic. Scopoli's tends to go south, wintering off West African coasts south to Namibia, but can be found over large parts of the Atlantic. These photos were taken on a Madeiran pelagic, one was the third official record.
