CORY'S SHEARWATER Calonectris borealis

Breeding mainly on the Azores and Madeira, this was the taxon originally lumped with the previous species. A few breed on other islands in the Atlantic such as the Canaries, and there is a slight overlap with Mediterranean breeding Scopoli's. Birds tend to disperse to South Africa and Brazil, but are more widespread, reaching the Indian Ocean and generally further south. Most seen in UK waters are Cory's, but there has been at least one confirmed record of Scopoli's, doubtless many birds cannot be positively identified.
