This bird breeds on many islands in the Mediterranean and Western Atlantic, and has two subspecies which have been suggested as splits. Although quite similar they breed in different areas and have different migration patterns, borealis ranging as far as The Cape and Northern Argentina, whereas the nominate race tends to remain nearer the breeding areas. The following species was formerly lumped with them also, but is quite different in appearence, and has generally been accepted as a good species.
