Although breeding on many subantarctic islands
throughout the southern oceans, this monotypic species is a scarce bird, rarely met with in
groups. Mainly sedentary with the exception of breeders on far south islands such as Crozet, it is
rarely seen in the Pacific far from New Zealand subantarctic islands. I have only ever seen one or two,
hence the poor photos, but being greyish overall with no white rump they are not easy to spot.
An underside view is diagnostic, with thick black leading edge, and white undertail almost to the tip.
