Some evidence suggests two subspecies may be split, but one is currently unamed as the type specimen turned out to be a juvenile of the other! They are all but impossible to tell apart, believe me, we've tried, although the bottom right bird may be a nominate and the others are probably the southern form. Breeding stations are all islands around New Zealand, the nominate to the north and east, the other to the south. They readily approach ships, where the colourful bill is readily seen.
