A monotypic species which tends to remain in colder waters, breeding on several subantarctic islands from the southern tip of South America to Macquarie and Campbell. It is rarely seen in large numbers but this may be due to the fact it tends not to approach ships, probably due to competition from larger species. Adults are readily identified, younger birds can be a problem but the long-winged, small stocky body imparts a distinctive jizz if learnt.
