PURPLE SANDPIPER Calidris maritima

Sometimes regarded as conspecific with Rock Sandpiper, this bird breeds in coastal regions and upland areas close to the snowline, from Eastern Canada to mid-Russia, and has bred in Scotland. Somewhat unusually it only moves a short distance south in winter, which is why numbers winter in Britain, presumably from Scandanavia and Iceland.
