GLAUCOUS GULL Larus hyperboreus

A widespread gull in Northern latitudes, regular in Britain in winter in small numbers, particularly in the north. Return to the same site annually is frequently recorded (as it is sometimes with Iceland), but the majority of sightings are of 1st winter birds, most of which do not survive to return as adults. The shot on the thumbnails page shows a third year bird which is far less commonly seen in wintering areas.
