The most popular of seabirds with the general public, often said to be the southern equivalent of auks. However, although they occupy a similar
ecological niche, their flightlessness makes them an order far removed, and probably far older, than auks. Although circumpolar
most species are found in the antarctic or subantarctic regions, only five species are found further north, two in South America and
one each in Australasia, Africa and almost on the equator in Galapagos. As per usual, taxonomists argue as to the number of species,
