SPOT-BILLED PELICAN Pelecanus philippensis

Another small Pelican, the smallest in Asia. Formerly a widespread breeder in Asia it is now predominantly found in India and Sri Lanka, but also Cambodia, Indonesia and possibly Sumatra, being classified as near-threatened. Whilst not exclusively coastal Indian colonies tend to avoid the centre of the country, and some colonies are sedentary whereas others disperse, and it is regularly found in Thailand. It was originally described from the Phillipines, but became extinct there in the 1960's, but recent conservation efforts have resulted in Indian populations increasing, it was formerly classed as Vulnerable.
