PINK-BACKED PELICAN Pelecanus onocrotalus

The smallest Pelican, locally common in many African countries and SW Arabia. Despite the name, a drab bird, the pink is essentially a beige sort of colour not restricted to the back. Essentially sedentary, but obviously birds move in response to water levels in Africa, and vagrants have occurred in Israel and Europe. There is apparently a feral colony in SW France, but as with the previous species it is likely that some birds are genuine vagrants.
