GREAT-CRESTED GREBE Podiceps cristatus

A very familiar bird in the UK, it has three subspecies, the nominate is found over much of Eurasia in lowland areas, some dispersing south in winter. African and Australian races are much more localised, we have only ever seen one or two despite extensive travelling in Australia, although there was talk of a split at one time that is unlikely. The largest Palearctic Grebe, it does not occur in the Americas.
