WHITE-FRONTED TERN Sterna striata

A New Zealand near-endemic breeder, although some disperse to Australia in winter, where a few breed on islands in the Bass Strait. Very pale in all plumages, the black cap never quite reaches the bill. The white band on the forehead which widens as moult into non-breeding plumage progresses gives the bird its name. An exclusively marine species.
