Most authorities now accept this as a split from Herring Gull but the morphological differences are small.
It "contained" two or three other taxa, one of which, Mongolian Gull, has recently been split, and
Taimyr Gull (birulae), which seems to have disappeared as a valid taxon at present. It breeds from
North and East Russia to Japan and Central Asia centred around Lake Baikal.
