An Arctic breeder mainly in the western hemisphere, this species apparently winters at sea far
further south than other Arctic gulls, and thus is frequently seen off coasts of South America and Africa. During migration it is frequently seen in
the UK, often blown inland, and occasionally adult birds are seen. The wing pattern is distinctive but is often confused with 1st-winter Kittiwake,
especially younger birds.
