ROYAL TERN Thalasseus maximus

Breeding in the Americas, this species is similar to other red or orange-billed terns. Slightly smaller than Caspian, but can be difficult to identify with certainty at any distance. Unfortunately this is probably not the reason for so few British sightings, although one recently spent over a year in the Channel Islands, visiting mainland UK on occasion.
