The only gull which has become really established in most of the Southern Hemisphere, breeding in the Australias, Africa,
South America and on the Antarctic Peninsular. The right-hand bird shown is in non-breeding plumage, rarely seen by
European birders, and shows quite heavy streaking as compared with its Northern Black-backed counterparts.There is
quite a lot of variation between populations, particularly in bare-parts colours, and it is possible there
may be more than one species.
