AMERICAN BLACK TERN Chlidonias (nigra) surinamensis

Long suggested as a possible split, the american race of Black Tern is distinguishable in the field, especially in immature and winter plumages, and as such has lead to a few British records. In common with "ours", they tend to be passage migrants in some areas, but extend from California to southern parts of Canada.
