STRIATED HERON Butorides striatus

Until recently lumped with Green Heron, this bird has many subspecies worldwide. Green Heron is confined to North & Central America, but the race illustrated on the left, in Venezuela, is actually the nominate, found over much of South America. The centre bird is Australian, macroryncha, and the right hand probably amurensis, which landed on a boat nearing Japan.
