CHUBUT (WHITE-HEADED) STEAMER DUCK Tachyeres leucocephalus

An Argentine endemic found on coastlines from south of Buenos Aires to the Chubut Peninsular. There is some overlap with Flying Steamer Duck in the far south of its range. Now officially called Chubut Steamer Duck, it was only described as a distinct species in 1981, when it was called "White-headed". The name has presumably been dropped because all other males can show a white head at times, and Chubut is the area of highest populations. These photos were all taken at the Magellanic Penguin colony at Punta Tombo, but it is best to get there before the tourist buses!
