Endemic to the Falklands, and closely resembling the
next species, this is the only photo I have of this bird, thanks to a captain of a cruise ship who deemed
it too rough to land by tender. As well as the white "dot" which is actually a pair of steamer-ducks,
the photo also shows the calm sea. We found out later that the captain in question had visited the Falklands
six times and never effected any landings. I can't find a bird in captivity so I shall probably paint one.
One moral of the story-always take your telescope on a cruise (if it was too rough to land, how come
I was able to use it?)
