Not unlike a larger version of the previous species,
also breeding on Arctic tundra but over a wider area. Wintering in southern USA, these birds being taken in
California, where huge flocks occur in winter as far east as New Mexico. There are two races differing in size, and
also a blue phase. The larger race, atlanticus are
predominantly white phase birds, whereas blue phase have been increasing overall. The right hand bird is taken in
captivity, but blue phase birds have turned up as vagrants to the UK. Like Ross's, there are a number of escapes and
feral birds permanently in the UK, but genuine vagrants do occur.
