SCALY-SIDED MERGANSER Mergus squamatus

Two mergansers are abundant, two are endangered, one critically. I have seen Brazilian in the wild, but not photographed it, Scaly-sided is the opposite, because unlike Brazilian, a few are kept in captivity, sadly there seems to be no captive-breeding program. The main breeding area is in Russia, with small populations in China and North Korea. Ironically it is protected in North Korea, but not elsewhere. The total population is probably under 8000, and declining overall, although in some areas the situation is improving slightly.
