A widespread and common duck, found over a wide area
of central lowland South America, with a Chilean coastal population west of the Andes. One of three
Netta species, it rarely reaches the southern tip and is recorded as a vagrant on the Falklands.
A striking species, the knob on the bill increases in size during the breeding season. These were all
taken at Costanera Sur, but probably no longer occur there since the habitat has changed.
