An abundant, sexually dimorphic pintail, the male being very
striking and distinctive.
The most widespread of the Anseriformes, breeding
across virtually the whole of the northern areas of North America and Eurasia, including a few pairs in the UK.
It is migratory, wintering to the south and forming huge flocks in some areas, always within the northern
hemisphere, but vagrants have occurred on Pacific Island and in South America. Eaton's Pintail, of Kerguelen
and Crozet, was formerly included but has now been split, I have yet to obtain a photo!
