Formerly lumped with Green-winged Teal when it was the most
widespread duck, breeding somewhat further south than Northern Pintail. The split meant that distribution
was confined to the Palearctic, but a race nimia occurs on the Aleutian Chain. This taxa is resident,
but not well differentiated, Palearctic birds migrate to the south in winter but not as much to Africa, chiefly
along the north coast and Nile basin.
