Endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, this distinctive bird is endangered. Although
captive breeding programs have undoubtedly saved it from extinction (30 birds in 1952) it requires releases
of captive bred birds to maintain numbers, particularly on Maui. Captive breeding is no problem, as any visitor
to WWT Slimbridge will know, the photos were taken there as I haven't been to Hawaii (yet!).
