Formerly known as Australian Wood Duck, this is an abundant Australian
endemic found wherever there are open bodies of water, in lightly-wooded areas. Although regarded as a pest in
some areas, farm dams and resevoirs have actually helped the species, and it has expanded its range into Queensland and
Tasmania. Even arid areas are populated if there is rain, and only in the far north is it considered a vagrant,
birds have also reached New Zealand. Another monotypic genus.
