The other Aix species has not recovered,
due to loss of habitat and vast numbers being exported from China for ornamental purposes (this
has now been banned). It has a specialised habitat along wooded rivers, rarely forming large flocks.
The bulk of the population now is probably in Japan with far fewer in China and even less in Siberia.
Winter movements result in records from Korea, they may breed in North Korea but obviously no
information is forthcoming. However, unlike Wood Duck, feral populations are established in Europe,
birds in the UK are increasing both numbers and range, and it is thought they outnumber Chinese birds.
