A primitive goose with its own genus, bulky with an
extended cere covering all but the tip of the bill, quite unlike most other geese. Restricted in range to
southern Australia, most breeding is on small offshore islands, especially in the Bass Strait and off the
Recherche Archipelago (a distinct subspecies). Outside the breeding season birds disperse to mainland
Australia and Tasmania, they have increased in numbers over the last forty years.
